Under certain circumstances, a physician the US on a J-1 visa can obtain a waiver allowing him or her to stay in the U.S. after completing residency training.
On April 9, 2012, the USCIS announced that it will continue to accept H-1B nonimmigrant visa petitions subject to the FY2013 cap. The agency began accepting these petitions on April 2, 2012. At the time of the press release, they had received 17,400 H-1B petitions counting toward the 65,000 cap & approximately 8,200 petitions toward 20,000 cap exemption for those with advanced degrees.
